Shells such as clams and cockles could be processed a way like fish to prepare thin sections. Thin sections (attached figure) reveal growth bands indicating age of the individual (for e.g. Greenland cockle; Kilada et al. 2007). Age information may also be used to investigate the growth of the animal and to assess at what age does the animal start spawning as shown in the graph (Kilada et al. 2007).
